Sugar, Spearmint and Surgical Spirit:Sanitising Sustainably

Oath Home Scent

Part two

Taking care of your creative hands in a caring and Earth-friendly way

When I started Oath Home, I wove my personal values into the company, instilling an ethos of working compassionately and sustainably throughout all we do.

We have talked in previous blogs about the sustainable approach we take when creating out products. However, in this blog series, I explore sustainable and natural ways to keep hands moisturised and healthy. Over this and subsequent blog posts I will take you through sustainable sanitiser; cleanser; exfoliator; moisturiser as well as reminding you (of course) of some of our sustainable gems from the Oath Home shop.

Sanitise

The world in which we live right now has made everyone hyper-aware of hand sanitisers. However, some hand sanitisers contain high levels of alcohol that, whilst effective, can strip the hands of oils, leaving them dry and in need of extra care. My all-time favourite hand sanitiser is Intelligent Nutrients hand sanitizer. It’s certified 100% organic, smells amazing, and became my best friend when I visited Goa early in 2020. I don’t find it drying at all. Whilst visiting southern India, I was very aware even then of the amount of fabric produced in the area; there are factories within the city of Goa. At Oath Home, we work to save as much top-quality fabric from heading to the vast scrap heaps by creating our home furnishings. Have a look at these beautiful cushions created from would-be waste fabric.

As you can imagine in 2021, any fantastic hand sanitiser is regularly sold out. As an alternative, I was able to find an organic alcohol company, Tinkture, which had diverted its resources to sanitiser production during the Covid crisis. Above all, I love that they use glass bottles and grain alcohol from stock to create this product. Another fantastic hand sanitiser is from the Beauty Kitchen. I stumbled upon this gem of a product, after forgetting my own sanitiser, whilst away for a few days during the Autumn.

I also made my own moisturising hand sanitiser during Lockdown last year after a recipe share from my Mum.

My recipe was two parts surgical spirit, one part aloe vera gel plus various essential oils of your choice. I mostly used lavender, spearmint, or tea tree.

Please note that this was my recipe for me – if you are planning on making your own, please take relevant specialist advice.
